The Environmental Agency says unregistered waste carriers provide the perfect accidental waste crime for people living in Essex, and that residents can take simple steps (when replying to Facebook adverts for waste removal) to ensure that they are using a registered waste carrier.
‘Man with a van’ posts on Facebook, who are NOT registered as official waste carriers, are taking advantage of innocent people who don’t realise that their waste must be removed by registered waste carriers only. Waste that is dumped illegally can be traced back to the original owner, who can face criminal charges themselves for not knowing where their waste will end up.
Registered waste carriers have voiced their ongoing concern for Essex residents, in a bid to make them aware of the dangers of using unregistered waste carriers.
Before using someone to take your household waste away, please follow these simple steps:
- Ask if they have a waste carrier’s licence from the Environment Agency
- Ask where the rubbish will end up
- Don’t pay cash
- Insist on a receipt
- Record the details of the vehicle used to take the rubbish away
“Rogue traders using social media to con people into parting with their waste cheaply are the new door steppers. People are then discovering their waste has been fly-tipped in a country lane or beside the road. These illegal waste carriers undermine legitimate businesses, by undercutting their prices and then blighting the environment.”
Peter Lennard – Environment Agent.
